Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my electrics be inspected?

Electrical installations and their periodicity of  inspection differ between installations and their potential risk. A domestic property that is Owner occupied is normally recommended to be inspected every 10 years. Tenanted or rented properties, come under the under the Private Rented Sector Scheme and must be inspected every 5 Years or Change of Ownership. Commercial is normally every 5 Years with exceptions, Theatres or places of public entertainment, every 3 years. Swimming Pools, Yearly.

My RCD keeps tripping, what can i do?

RCD’s are very sensitive devices and are installed to protect the property against fault and additional protection. but there are things you can carry out prior to calling an electrician:
1. Identify which circuit is causing the fault, this is carried out at the fuse board. if you have one RCD protecting several circuits, turn off the RCD and all the fuses after the RCD. Reset the RCD and ensure it is staying on, then working through each fuse, put the fuses back on, one at a time (waiting about 60 seconds between each fuse). If the RCD trips when energising a fuse, leave the fuse off and carry on with the rest. You should be able to establish which circuit is carrying the fault by following this method.
2. The fuse that tripped as soon as you turned it on or within 60s has the fault. say for instance identified as ‘downstairs sockets’. The next step is to identify if the fault is on the fixed wiring or an appliance. This is done by removing all plugs from all the sockets in that area. Note: turning off the sockets will not rectify the fault as RCD’s detect neutral to earth faults and turning off the switch turns off the live supply only, the neutral and earth are still connected.
3. Once you have removed all the sockets, try resetting the fuse. If it stays on and the RCD does not trip then the fault is with an appliance.
4. To identify which appliance is faulty, plug each socket back in one at a time waiting a short period of time between each. If the RCD trips, leave that plug out and carry on. The faulty appliance is therefore the one that trips out the RCD.
5. If none of the above steps work, please give us a call and we will endeavour to get an electrician to you as soon as possible.
